DJ Sasha Crnobrnja (Cosmic Rocker) – God’s Eye [Codek]
Caural – Red Sunshine [Chocolate Industries]
DJ Olive – Time For You… [theAgriculture]
Bionic Booger Breaks – Side B, Track 2 [Dirtstyle]
Sebastien Tellier – La Ritournelle (Mr. Dan’s Magic Wand Mix) [Record Makers]
Catalyst – Sunnin’ [2000 Black/Planet E Communications]
Walter Jones – I’ll Keep On Loving You [DFA]
John Shannon – Somewhere (Eric Kupper Remix) [Obliqsound]
Floating Points – Love Me Like This (Nonsense Dub) [R2]
Trus’me – Put It On Me (feat. Amp Fiddler) [Prime Numbers/Fat City]
Las Flores Project – Nyro’s Blues [WESC]
Donald Byrd/Madlib – Steppin’ Again [Blue Note]
Edwin Starr – There You Go [Soul/Motown]
The New Birth – Ooh Baby, I Love The Way [Victor/RCA]
Brass Construction – Blame It On Me [United Artists]

Continuing with the “side action” vibe of the last show, I finally put together another episode of listening room type stuff.  Notables here include the keen global sensitivities of Sasha Crnobrnja, the cinematic sensuality of Sebastien Tellier, Amp Fiddler’s collaboration with Trus’Me, the soulful warmth of Catalyst, and the always on-point productions of both Caural and FLoating Points.  it’s all good, really, but the closer from Brass Construction is a truly special one, in my opinion.  If I were making one of those *Another Late Night* series volumes or a *Back To Mine* disc, “Blame It On Me” would be a no-brainer to include.  It’s the type of song that I play for people just to see how they’ll react…

within my brief period of spinning parties, clubs, and bars i discovered something about myself:  i am forever destined to be that side room selector.  even when i was in the main room, i still brought the side room cuts along for the ride to try out between the club bangers.  family life ultimately brought the gigs to a halt, but i know i’d be spinning side rooms if i was still out there.  that’s where i always heard the more interesting or challenging selections – didn’t matter what event i was at.  i think that this mix stems out of that love for the side room, whether it’s mocky’s take on isolee or the beautiful enigma that is arthur russell.  if us and us were an actual club monthly, i would demand that all 13 minutes of russell’s “in the light of the miracle” be played each month at some point in the night.  to experience that song on the right sound system…impossible to resist.  it’s the same way i feel about carl craig under his paperclip people moniker or luke vibert’s disco turn as kerrier district.

other cuts of note include the instant sing-along goodness of samuel purdey, the sleek future soul of $tinkworx, the cuddly electronic warmth of capitol k, and towa tei as remixed by cornelius.  this mix represents the midtempo-uptempo side of things; we’ll get downtempo with part two next time.  here’s hoping you enjoy the “side action”…

“all you have to do…is try.  all you have to do is…testify.”

i’ve been putting off this mix for over a year.  recent events finally made me get off my butt and commit myself to getting this one done.  between the election unrest in iran, economic instability, and a number of significant deaths in june (ed mcmahon, farrah fawcett and michael jackson in one week alone), the fragile nature of life has been weighing heavy on my mind.  i needed to make this mix for me more than anything, but i’m all about sharing music with others, so hopefully somebody else will find some solace in these selections.

as the title suggests, there is a first installment to this mix and i can’t believe that i left the winstons off that one.  sampled countless times, it’s here as not only a great addition to the unconventional hymnal, but as a nod to phuture frequency’s championing of drum and bass, a genre that is quite familiar with the “amen break.”  so there’s funk and soul-driven gospel here along with some secular tunes that i thought made great segue pieces.  some psychedelic interludes from john rydren, who’s totally getting his ken nordine on in terms of spoken word delivery.  some gospel glitch sharing space with broken beat, choirs that wouldn’t be out of place at the disco, and a group of hebrew israelites who damn near sound like the jackson 5 (tonistics).  and you will never hear pat boone sound as cool as he does on “the addicts psalm.”

i remember interviewing ohmega watts for impose magazine (back when it was still in print and not strictly web) and he was telling me about sugar pie desanto’s inspiration for “are you satisfied.”  her husband died around the same time that a fire gutted her home.  in spite of those setbacks, she persevered and it’s that same spirit that bursts forth through the song.  joy jones exemplifies that as well: i absolutely had to include “the joy” as part of the unconventional hymnal.  it’s my song of encouragement as of late.  the same can be said for doom’s “thank ya,” which i play every week right before i walk into work.

my apologies for the low volume on “open your eyes” – my copy of the organized konfusion record is a low pressing.  beyond that, i really didn’t rehearse this mix, although i had a good idea as to where certain songs should go.  basically, i wanted to move as the spirit led me, so to speak.  some of the transitions may not be their smoothest, but neither is a believer’s spiritual walk through this life.  with that said, i hope that you enjoy this one.  peace, beats, and blessings…

awake from winter hibernation and ready to spring ahead with the rest of the universe.  no big concept or anything like that this time around…just playing some tunes and having some fun.  starting off with the unstoppable shawn lee (why do i see myself doing an entire show based solely on his work?), then diving into some beats and rhymes and other odds and ends.  note the pair of joints from brothers and systems circa 1992: the transcontinental weekend album is one of my desert island picks.  both happy mondays and pop will eat itself come straight off the cassette.  anybody remember when the term “mixtape” still meant cassettes?  anyone?

newness comes in the form of n.a.s.a., the nat king cole and femi kuti remixes, and a killer closer from somalia’s finest, k’naan (make one pirate joke and i may have to cyber-slap you…).  i’m making up for lost time and it starts with this episode.  hope you enjoy it…

1.  shawn lee’s ping pong orchestra – hey ya!
2.  selda – yaz gazeteci yaz
3.  thes one – cheetah
4.  brothers and systems – 1/2 4 me, 1/2 4 u
5.  baron zen – burn rubber (dam funk remix)
6.  n.a.s.a. – money (feat. david byrne, chuck d, ras congo, seu jorge, and z-trip)
7.  myka nyne – me and my girl
8.  serengeti – guess what mom
9.  minamina goodsong – sollay
10. brothers and systems – trace element
11. luke vibert – i love acid
12. nat king cole – day in, day out (cut chemist)
13. happy mondays – bob’s yer uncle

15. femi kuti – you better ask yourself (abel okugawa remix)
16. k’naan – somalia

no time for talking on this one – let’s cut straight to the chase.  i’m not a bit sad or sorry to see 2008 go, but it was a year for great music.  by no means is this a definitive “best of” list, just a handful of some really good songs that i came across and/or looked me up when i needed them most.  and now that it’s winter around my way, i finally have a good excuse to play a cut by inlove that i’ve been singing since last summer (lol).  hope you enjoy the selection…

“a soundtrack for a very critical and crucial time…”
transmitting from mount vernon, new york, usa

inspired by the implosion of america’s economy and the mounting tensions in the face of what is arguably the most important election in the nation’s history, i decided to string some songs together that (hopefully) speak towards the hope, passion, paranoia, disgust, and hopelessness some stateside citizens are facing.  this mix contains strong language in places, some of it uttered by children (see the yo la tengo cut).  just figured i’d warn those who needed the warning…

1.  lee mason & his orchestra – shady blues
2.  anime – the day after
3.  dj wally / dj willie ross – grim melody
4.  j dilla – anti-american graffiti / geek down

getting back into the swing of things after an unintentional summer hiatus with some lighthearted head nodders.  parts of the mix (from prefuse to jeff lorber and from cosby to the januaries) were recorded back in 2005 as part of my own podcast.  i’ll admit that the audio quality isn’t the best, but there are songs within those segments that i thought some would enjoy hearing.  at any rate, i hope you like this one.

2.  james reese and the progressions – let’s go (it’s summertime)
3.  dr. who dat? – on the doelow
