DJ ZAZ Brown – Greenz Like That

Just as the title states, I made a mean pot of collard greens to standard. Smoked turkey necks and all that. I know all the vegan listeners got mad, but these greens are good.

Anyways…this time around I added the main ingredient of Soulection artists. Evil Needle, Sango and Ta-ku have been serving up very nice independent releases that fly under the radar. They can be found on Soundcloud but throw them some change on Bandcamp. Also in the mix is my local yokels…The Cornel West Theory and my man John Wesley Moon mashing up Jamiroquai.

If you have a question on where to get any of the tracks, hit me in the comments section.

DJ ZAZ Brown, ya’ll~

Us & Us: “Love And Some 45s…”
A Motion Podcast Episode for May 2012
Transmitting from Mount Vernon, New York, USA
Supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, CD, cassette, and MP3

Inspired by Record Store Day 2012, this show is an all seven-inch vinyl set. Most of them spinning at 45 rpm, others running at 33-1/3. Some soul, some funk, some jazz, and some other stuff as well. Served up freeform style. Hope you enjoy it, snaps, crackles, pops and all. Not a safe one for work, but fun just the same.

FYI: The MCs featured on “Showtime” by Big Dada Sound are Ty, Roots Manuva, Juice Aleem, Mike Ladd, and Toastie Taylor. And the Martin Luther King PSA at the end? That’s from a 7″, too…

Us & Us: “The Sensitive Adventures Of Ebb And Flow…”
A Motion Podcast Episode for September 2011
Transmitting from Mount Vernon, New York, USA
Supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, CD, cassette, and MP3

I’ve been wanting to say something. Prior to the two episodes from me that popped up out of nowhere last year, I was absent for a year and some change, so I feel like I ought to

actually say something. At the same time, the music speak volumes on its own and is far more eloquent than I am.

Acts like Jonti, Sepalcure, Toro Y Moi, and When Saints Go Machine represent the current obsessions while the music of Arthur Russell remains a constant inspiration. Arthur’s

Landing represents lovely for Russell’s compositions. There’s some beat science from Andres and Sir Froderick as well as Bullion, who had a remix project marrying the work of

The Beach Boys with J Dilla’s b eats. Ultramarine put out their first new material in over thirteen years, which thrills me to death. And there are pieces from Phil Upchurch and Bill

Cosby that resonate strongly with me as of late. The glitchy sensitivity of Claro Intelecto and Auch, the wide-eyed fun of Saint Etienne remixing Pizzicato Five, the album cuts from

Funkadelic and The Crusaders that I’ve been wanting to play for you for months now…this is just me doing what I do. Grabbing some selections from the collection and trying to

connect some dots.

Thank you very much for joining me. Hope you enjoy the set…

Us & Us Episode 17

Us & Us: “Making Up For Lost Time…”
A Motion Podcast Episode for November 2011
Transmitting from Mount Vernon, New York, USA
Supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, CD, cassette, and MP3

On this episode, I had to dedicate some space to the words and music of the late Gil Scott-Heron. In addition, a Johnny Hammond cut is included to big up the production genius of the late Alphonzo “Fonce” Mizell, one-half of the Mizell brothers. Other than that, some past, present, and future side room flavors along with some pieces I’ve long since forgotten about and deserve to get some shine. Check the free verse from Antipop Consortium’s High Priest guest starring on the Diego Cortez track. New releases include some beat science from Lee Bannon and Katalyst, the Billie Holiday meets Bjork beauty of Amenta, and an ecstatic piece from Matthew Herbert’s latest album (the one that got PETA really, really upset). And if the thou ght of Sly Stone being homeless and living out of a van depresses you as much as it does me, perhaps you’ll appreciate my reaching back for the closer on his *Life* album with The Family Stone.

The Quiet Ones: A Phuture Frequency Halloween Special

It was October 31, 1997. I was spinning records at a party in Upstate New York. From the elevated DJ booth I saw my girlfriend (now my wife) being accosted by some guy and I ran downstairs and straight towards him…in the middle of my set. I never made contact with him; it took three or four of my friends to hold me back while I was charging at him. Despite all this, I went back upstairs and finished my set. I wouldn’t spin another Halloween party for at least eight years.

Taking this into consideration, I find it more than a little ironic that I was asked to record this year’s Phuture Frequency Halloween show. I was all set to decline when I realized that I needed this challenge and the catharsis. It was a chance to step away for a moment from the listening room vibe I get into with Us & Us and dive into the darker material that I have at home. Just wanted to have some fun with it, really.

The show title comes from the sa ying “It’s the quiet ones you have to look out for,” which is something that has been said about me on several different occasions. I’ll be back to my usual side room selector business next month. Until then, have a safe Halloween and I really hope you enjoy this one…

Mothers Against Noise Podcast #1 – wAgAwAgA

This is the first installment of the Mothers Against Noise Podcast series. Mothers Against Noise is a London-based collective of Producers, DJs and Graphic Designers peddling a distinctive brew of Dubstep, Jungle and Breakcore. Our chief aim is to put dark atmospheres and a bass’n’breaks mentality back where they belong; the London club scene.

This month’s featured artist is wAgAwAgA, an itinerant bass-maverick with releases on Imminent and Acroplane. His productions range from tongue-in-cheek Breakcore to deep, World Music-inspired ambience, taking in a healthy dose of juddering 2-step on the way. He’s provided something a little different for our podcast – a pulsating digi-dub affair featuring Bjork and Radiohead dubversions and bucketloads of sub. In addition, there’s a mix by Mother’s resident Tufrs and a sprinkling of MAN Dubs from our upcoming release on 20Twelve Recordings.

On October 19, the Mothers Against Noise album will be released on Twenty/Twelve Rec. featuring tunes by Duskky, Myr, slavetothewage, Hurtdeer, Macka and Second Line. Listen to it now! Also, check out Mothers Against Noise on Facebook. Cheers!

For this month, it’s just another collection of new and old tunes I wanted to hear together. New Planet Mu material from Starkey

gets paired up with older Mu works from Capitol K and Trus’Me turns in some remix magic for LCD Soundsystem. Ultramarine’s *Every

Man And Woman Is A Star* is a desert island disc for me, hands down. “Lights In My Brain” remains a favorite from that album.

from that album. Can’t believe that the Innerzone Orchestra cut from 1999, nor can I believe that “Do The Astral Plane” almost

didn’t make the *Cosmogramma* album (Flying Lotus said so via his Twitter stream). And has it really been almost a year since

Domu announced his retirement from music? I’m still in denial about that, by the way.

Even if life has gotten you to the point that you’re physically exhau sted, hopefully there’s some song within this set that will

cause your soul and spirit to get down with the get down. Dancing in the listening room is not only permitted, but encouraged…

Back once again with the Trust In Dust Radio Show.

On this show, the Album of the Week is by DZA. His ‘Five-Finger Discount’ is the russian beatmaker’s first full length outing on Error Broadcast & is packed with great tracks of a warm, fuzzy & wonky nature. 4-tracks featured here, but we’ll be playing more in future weeks.

The Connection Section is based around Black Magic Woman by Dennis Brown & includes tracks by Lukid & Jose James.

Other highlights include a classic Ashley Slater track, new music from Pursuit Grooves, Actress, SBTRKT, Kyle Hall, Kohib, Shlohmo, Dimlite, Ty & Flying Lotus.

Turn it up & enjoy

Back for 2010, I take a little time to pay respect to the living
legacies of Guru, Malcolm McLaren, and Steve Reid. “Lauretta”
wouldn’t get out of my head after McLaren died and I’m not sure how
many people would even reference his Fans EP, seeing as how it’s this
weird combination of R&B with operatic arias. Outside of that, just
playing some releases from this year and last year that have captured
my interest, bringing along some cuts from previous years to tie
together the loose ends.

Back on my listening room/side room selections thing again. Been way
from it too long. It feels good to be back. Hope this one finds you
in a good place…

Guest Mix from DJ Dub

For this weeks show I picked out some of my favourite soul and disco records of the last couple of months. DJ Dub provided an excellent guest mix for the second hour featuring a great selection of Dub, Hip Hop and Breakbeat.
